Eye-level view of a serene landscape with a winding path

We don't always realize it, but one of the biggest things holding us back may not be our circumstances or environment. It may be what we believe about ourselves.

We don't always realize it, but one of the biggest things holding us back may not be our circumstances or environment. It may be what we believe about ourselves.

Core beliefs are the deeply ingrained assumptions you carry about who you are, how others see you, and what’s possible for your life. They don’t just influence your thinking—they directly influence your behavior, decisions, your relationships, your career choices, quality of life and the direction of your future.

And when those beliefs are limiting or negative, they can quietly keep you stuck for years. This blog post will explore how unwanted beliefs are formed and how thye are limiting you and how you can change them for lasting meaningful change.

Where These Beliefs Come From

Core beliefs are usually formed early in life, often without your awareness. As a child, your brain tried to make sense of your experiences—especially the painful or confusing ones.

Maybe you were neglected, criticized, ignored, unloved, rejected, or made to feel like you weren’t enough.

So you adapted.

You formed beliefs like:

  • “I’m not good enough”

  • “I’m unloveable”

  • “I’m unworthy

  • “I have no value - My needs don't matter"

At the time, these beliefs helped you make sense of your environment. But what once helped you cope as a child is now holding you back.

How These Beliefs Show Up in Your Life Today

These beliefs don’t stay in the past. They show up in your daily life— often in ways that feel frustrating, confusing, defeating, disheartening or even self-sabotaging.

You might notice:

  • Overthinking everything you say or do

  • Constant self-doubt, even when you’re capable

  • Fear of rejection or abandonment in relationships

  • People-pleasing or difficulty setting boundaries

  • Procrastination, avoidance, or feeling stuck

  • Never feeling “good enough,” no matter what you achieve

And the hardest part?

These patterns happen automatically deep beneath the surface Drive your thoughts, decisions and behavior-actions.

The Cost of Unchecked Core Beliefs

When these beliefs go unchallenged, they create invisible limits in your life.

They can:

  • Keep you in relationships that don’t fulfill you

  • Hold you back from opportunities you’re fully capable of

  • Create cycles of anxiety, overthinking, and emotional burnout

  • Prevent you from feeling confident, secure, or at ease with yourself

  • Feeling resentful of other people because you give too much

Over time, this doesn’t just affect how you feel—it affects how you live and the quality of your life.

You start playing smaller. Settling. Holding back. Questioning yourself in moments where you could be moving forward.

Why Change Feels So Difficult

If you’ve tried to “think more positively” or push past these patterns, you may have noticed something:

It doesn’t last.

That’s because these patterns aren’t surface-level—they’re rooted in core beliefs that your brain still treats as true.

Until those beliefs are addressed directly and revised, the same thoughts, emotions, decisions and behaviors tend to come back.

What Happens When You Change the Belief

When you begin to identify and shift these core beliefs, things start to change in a very real, noticeable way.

You don’t just feel better—you operate differently.

  • Your behavior and the way you make decision changes

  • You stop second-guessing yourself in the same way

  • You feel more grounded and confident

  • Relationships become clearer, healthier, and less anxiety-driven

  • You take action more easily instead of staying stuck in your head

  • You experience a greater sense of control and direction in your life

These are a few examples of the kind of changes that my clients have experienced and isn’t temporary—it’s foundational.

This Is Where the Work Begins

Changing core beliefs isn’t about forcing positivity or “fixing” yourself.

It’s about identifying “what you would like” and systematically revising the identified unwanted belief(s) that are holding you back. This allows you to start naturally experiencing outcomes that are in alignment with what you want most in your life.

That’s exactly what we focus on in my work.

If you’re tired of feeling stuck in the same patterns, and you’re ready to shift what’s actually driving them, I invite you to take the next step.

You can start with a free consultation, where we’ll talk through what you’re experiencing and what’s been holding you back.
